Yesterday we stopped by Pachyderm Studios in Minnesota (about an hour outside of Minneapolis, but in the extremely rural town of Cannon Falls). Nirvana’s “In Utero” was recorded there, amongst other amazing things. I saw the microphone that Kurt actually sang into (as my inner-16-year-old, and 31-year-old, screamed “OMG!”). The setting was very “Last Days” — unsurprisingly. And the guy who owns the place, as he showed us around the grounds, told us that when Nirvana booked studio time there they did so under the name the Simon Ritchie Bluegrass Ensemble; when the intern was sent to pick the band up at the airport, he probably had his own OMG-moment.This place was pretty amazing, on many levels.
